The Friends Curry Supper at The Viceroy

The Friends Curry Supper at The Viceroy

The Friends of Yeovil Hospital raised £1381 at a fundraising curry supper on Monday 19 June to celebrate the relaunch of the Viceroy Indian Restaurant in Middle Street, Yeovil. The prize for the Lucky Ticket Draw was dinner for two at the Viceroy.

Brothers Luthfur, Moe and Raju Rahman opened the Viceroy in October twenty three years ago and it quickly became a popular meeting place for many local residents. They are well known locally for their charitable work and were kind enough to host the Curry Supper for The Friends of Yeovil Hospital.

The evening's curry supper had been specially planned by Chef, Raj (MohanRaj Elumalai) as a taster of the excellent food we can expect from the re-launched Viceroy. Moe and Raj decided a visit to London was necessary to buy some vital ingredients that will remind those who love Indian food or who have been to India that a treat was in store.

Luthfur wanted to completely change the décor and was looking for something that would reflect the Viceroy name. After seeing Rob Wheeler's graffiti art the two met and discussed the Viceroy project. Much research was done by Rob and in the restaurant there are wonderful murals of stylised Indian decoration – vibrant colours and flowers woven in with the lion of England wearing the King's crown. All executed freehand by Rob Wheeler, a graffiti art and printmaker, who lives and works at his Bristol company graft. The work is both humorous and uplifting and a perfect accompaniment to delicious food and comfortable surroundings.

The Viceroy is one of six award winning restaurants owned and operated by the Rahmen brothers. The latest two, The Mint Room in Bath which is run by Moe, and The Mint Room in Bristol, opened more recently where Luthfur is currently based during its opening months. Avril Pearson is the Business Manager for the Viceroy.

Over the years the Friends of Yeovil Hospital have been left amazing legacies, donations and even houses that have helped to fund items of equipment like scanners, specialist outreach equipment, digital dental imaging and services such as the elderly special care unit, special care baby unit and much of the dementia care programme.

The Friends Hospital Shop, daily Trolley Service and the Coffee Shop in the Emergency department continue to provide the major source of disposable funds and is staffed by nearly 100 volunteers. In the past year nearly £200,000 was donated to the hospital by The Friends.
